New possibilities...amongst all of the old, never-changing life. Sometimes I wonder if I am so afraid of change that I repel it...or maybe change was just waiting for the right moment. My horoscope, which I will admit I don't look at often because I think your horoscope can be self-fulfilling, says that in all ways this is my year. Something about the planets aligning perfectly or being in the same house or throwing a party...yeah. Anyway, the point is that I am going to be 35 this year. The big 3 5. Which really freaks me out because that was the age that I thought my life would be over. Sooooo...let's embrace that idea, shall we? Let the old me die. Let what emerges from the ashes be the greatest phoenix that I am able to become.

As for resolutions, I think I shall try only one a month.

JANUARY- Exercise three days a week (preferably Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).

In other news, most know that I have a complete obsession with all things movie. The actors, directors, the books, the screenplays, the awards-you name it! (I truly must digress for just a moment. It struck me today that I, who am usually totally in the "real" world dealing with job, family, and day-to-day life, am hooked on the fantasy world, while my husband who tends to be more of a dreamer, loves reality TV (Deadliest Catch is his favorite, which is really difficult for me to understand or appreciate.) The whole reason I even brought up this subject was that I was reading IMDB, a truly excellent site, and there was all sorts of things happening in the Hollywood world. The movies of 2011 are supposed to be bigger and better-we see the end of Harry Potter and the Twilight series, and we begin many adventures with comic book heroes-Thor, Green Hornet, Green Lantern, etc. Also, Natalie Portman is the "It" girl right now, or at least it seems that way. She just came out with Black Swan (which I do want to see!) and is also in a romantic comedy with Ashton Kutcher and also the aforementioned Thor. Three movies in just a matter of months! I am excited to see all of them and have enjoyed watching many of her movies.

I think that should do it...let the year begin!!!!!! :)

A Few Ways To Prepare Your Children For School...from a teacher's perspective...

School is just around the corner for us southwestern, desert dwellers. Hopefully, your summers have been full of lazy mornings sleeping in and loud nights where you stay up too late. Summer is the perfect time to shut your brain down a little and do all of those wonderful things that you can tell your great-grandkids someday. Like, eating ice cream from a street vendor, blocking off the street for some neighborhood football, playing way too many video games, campouts and smores, and sitting quietly on the porch watching the sunset or the rain come in. The monsoons where you run to get out of the rain, and the sweltering heat where you dash to the nearest body of water. Only one-fourth of the year is allocated for this special time so make it special! : )

With that said, of course, this is not why I am writing. I don't think anyone really needs advice on how to be a kid in the summer. It's what comes naturally. I thought, instead, I would write on how to prepare your children for the school year. As a teacher, there are a lot of things we do to prepare. Everything from putting up our fresh new bulletin boards to lesson plans to make a bazillion copies. We work hard so that when you come to school we have done our best to make an educational atmosphere. One where learning is the most conducive and pleasant. That doesn't always mean it will be fun...on the contrary, learning is an adventure and adventures are never just for fun! They excite us, scare us, thrill us, and challenge us to be the very best we can possibly be! That's why so many people crave adventures. And to be fair, not all learning takes place in the classroom!! (The teacher inside quivers with fear when I say this because I don't want them to take away my license!!! : P) However, let's get ready to learn.

**School shopping...

Let's start here, because let's face it. This is where it all begins. That moment where you start seeing the aisles and aisles of crayons at Wal-Mart, the Staples/OfficeMax ads...even the grocery stores conspire to sell us what we might or might not need for the coming school year. And I am sure that your school has already told you what you NEED to have. Here's my advice for what it's worth. 1)A really nice, simply binder. Please don't spend that much money on the expensive kind! Those are great and fun, but since a binder usually doesn't last all year long anyway, go with the sturdiest one you can find for the best price. I especially like the ones where you can put the paper in the cover to customize it. 2)Paper and pencils. Um, duh. So many times I have heard students say that they don't have these at home. You should have enough to last you awhile and they are really cheap during the month of July. Keep them with you in your binder, but also at home. 3) Crayons, contruction paper, scissors, glue sticks. All of this is great and you know you will have at least one "creative" project during the year, so be prepared ahead of time. As for the rest...yes, teachers do like donations of tissues, hand sanitizer, spare t-shirts, etc., but only buy what you can afford to, and always be ready to supply those things later in year when the teachers run out and ask for more. 4)Backpack. Make it a sturdy one, look for sales, and think about only buying one every two years or so. One of the things that my family does is to switch backpacks, so they still get to have the experience of having a "new" backpack, but I don't have to shell out more money. If you are an only child, maybe try switching with a friend. 5)CLOTHES!!!!! The fun stuff. I always like to go through what my kids have, sort and send to goodwill/friends, and THEN go shopping. I know that your child is going to want to buy everything they see, but the key to shopping with kids is compromise. I always let them pick out their first day outfit with usually very little say from me. This gives them a chance to "EXPRESS" who they are and I feel like I have spoiled them a little. The rest of what we buy is what they need...you know-the shirts, jeans, socks, underwear-basics they will use all year long. I also like to make sure they have one nice "dressy" outfit, which my kids always need for the many performances at our school. If you know what you need, then you can usually find it for less money than if you wait for that note home saying your child needs such and such.

****And here we pause for, well, mommy time with a two year old!!!****

To be continued...

S-

Why don't they...

...have great websites for ten year olds???

April was on WeeWorld the other day and I decided to look it up on commonsense media (LOVE that site!!) and see what it was rated. Get this?!?!??? It's rated 15 and up! So needless to say, we had to go shopping for a new fun site for her and discovered very quickly that there is little out there that is geared towards children. The teen market seems to grow and grow...but kids as young as four and five are becoming more and more computer literate and there is no available market for them. I will say that your choices seem to be limited to either barbie world or club penguin, both of which make you pay to upgrade your membership to the "fun" level. o.0

All right. Rant over. Update on me...?

Well, the poetry idea was a great one, but didn't last very long. : ) Maybe next year?? Summer is upon us, as is the heat. We kicked off the end of the year with a beautiful "graduation" ceremony with my Ashley going on to high school. I can't believe that I will have kids all over the place-one at daycare, two at my school, and one at high school!! My poor little minivan will surely be getting many, many miles this next school year!

In other news, teaching junior high this year was an exciting adventure that I get to repeat again in a couple of months. I learned A LOT! I think the first thing I learned was that students in junior high seem to have their brains surgically removed and it's not added back until sometime in high school. Also, grading 94 essays...or 94 of anything!!...is hard work!!! ; ) I promise that I will learn how to not procrastinate. Tomorrow. LOL

All right...I feel slightly better that I have written on here. So fun! They won, which is always awesome, but I also have to add that I have almost as much fun watching all of the people around me. The cool thing is that I sat up top so I get to see everyone. Plus, there's like a special elevator and a special eatery up there. AND FUNNEL CAKE!!! So all things considered it was a really great night. So I guess I can just say that every once in a while, sports makes me happy.

Poetry - Ugh!! I'm a teacher, therefore I always have papers to pass out. Most of the classes I had students who wanted to volunteer and they were passed out end of story. Get to one of my last classes of the day and I hand a stack of papers for a student to pass out. She looks at me, looks at them, and then I moved on to do something else, assuming she would do it. Next thing I know she is calling student's names and making them come to HER desk to get their papers...and ya know what? Every one of them did!!!! : )

Another funny moment is when Sammy was sharing food. She is a very generous and sweet little girl. The only downside is when she thinks that you need more and shoves it into your mouth. Then she pulls out a Santa hat, puts it on, and in her cute, tiny voice, says Ho! Ho! Ho! A-DOR-A-BLE!!!!!

Poetry:

I learned today about the different types of sonnets. When I think of sonnets, I think traditional Shakespeare, which is what my 8th graders will be starting with this week. Now I won't be writing a sonnet tonight, but soon...

Clip-Clop, Clip-Clop
the sound my heels make
Clip-Clop, Clip-Clop
oh, how my feet do ache!!!

LOL

Okay, but seriously...

Little birdy on my sill
Spring is almost here
Two more months until
I see the ocean clear.
(That one should be titled "Ode to Spring Break in Oregon with my Little Baby Brother".)

Th-th-th-that's all she wrote, folks!

S-

2010 Day 4

Happiness Project: I haven't watched Leno in a very long time. I used to watch it quite regularly, especially Mondays when he would read the headlines that people sent in. But tonight when I was watching was probably THE funniest one I have heard in a long time. It's an advice column called Dear John. A woman wrote in saying that she left for work, got a mile away, and then her car stalled. She walked back home to ask her husband for help, only to find out that when she got there he was having an affair. The writer then goes on to ask for advice on what she should do. The answer was amazingly awesome-John, the advice columnist extraordinaire, started giving advice about what to do when your car stalls and what causes that. Can you believe that???

Poetry...I am really finding it difficult to write poetry at the end of the day. The last thing I seem to want to do is THINK. Hmmmm...have to think about that one.

Night-night, baby said
as she crawled into my lap
Night-night, I said
as I tucked her into bed

Sweet dreams I wish
for you all night long
the dawn approaches
and we begin our day again

S-

P.S.

Okay, so someone put their thinking cap on and came up with a way to turn your blog into a book...huh.

s-

2010 Day 3

Duh duh duh... work starts tomorrow. Ugh. I am so not looking forward to that. I would really, really like just one more week off, but I guess that is not going to happen. It just seems like you go on vacation and then spend the rest of the time wishing you hadn't gone so that you could have gotten more work done. How am I ever going to catch up??

Happiness Project: Today's happiness is friends. I really am grateful for all of my good friends and all that they do for me. Everything from a listening ear to a fun night out (which by the way I am SO ready for). I can never repay my friends for all that they do for me.

Hmmm...which I guess brings me to a poem. Any poem...hmmm...

Some days I think of colors as numbers
red is three and blue is four
then of course when you mix them
you get purple seven once more.

Ha! LOL I don't know why I think the way I do, but I do...

S-

2010 Day 2- Kinda...

Thought I would make it...didn't realize how fast time goes when you are in the grading zone. Taking on this new position has been very challenging for me. I constantly feel plagued by doubts of all kinds-am I teaching the right thing? are they learning from me? am I too easy? too hard? is there a better way to inspire them? All of these run through my head over and over again. UGH!!

Happiness Project moment: Todays happy moment was when I got my hair done. There is something wonderfully magic and peaceful about changing color and cut. I am not sure if it is because someone is doing it for me or what, but I felt an instant surge of happiness afterward. It also helps immensely that the person who does my hair is also a really good friend of mine that I can talk to about anything. So here is to hair and the ear of a good friend.

After grading WAY too much poetry, I am really feeling more uninspired than anything else...so I think I will just try for a rhyming couplet...

Time flies away, silent wings of change and pain
reflecting on a moment when things are happy again.

S-

2010 Day 1

So here we are. A new year. Well, actually, it's almost day 2 of the new year so I had better get a move on.

Happiness Project. Haven't been very successful in that aspect of my life at the moment...hmmmm...let's see... I guess what makes me happy is my kids. They are the most important part of my life. Funny thing of the day: Sammy wanting to wear her new cowgirl boots for, like, 24 hours straight over her pj's. How cute is THAT!!!!! That girl really does love shoes. She is also starting to talk quite a bit which is frustrating and exciting...frustrating when we don't understand and exciting when we do. We were also supposed to start potty training but, well, that did NOT happen. Maybe in a few more weeks????

I also wanted to try doing something each day. You know, like Julie and Julia or all the other popular blogs out there. Really couldn't think of anything very earth-shattering so I though maybe I would just start writing some of my poetry on here. Since time is limited...I think I will just leave with a haiku.

heat seeps through skin like
ocean waves upon the sand
blurring time and angst

S-

The Happiness Project is...

...about to take off!! I just printed off a bunch of information on how to start a Happiness Project group. For those of you who don't know, I found this wonderful site run by Gretchen Rubin. She decided that she wanted to become a happier person (don't we all????) and she wrote about her efforts. You can read about it on her website or buy her book. This is something that I want to try and do...

One of the things that she has on her website is a quiz asking you "How well do you know yourself?" I think I know myself pretty well, so let's see how this works:

1. What part of the newspaper do you read first?

When I read the paper, and it isn't often, I always like to start out with the Parade section. Ya know-the insert with all the questions about movie stars and random bits of Hollywood fluff. I wanted to be an actress when I was little and my love of all things related to show biz has never ended. I am a loyal addict of imdb.com and going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do!

2. What are three books you’ve read in the past year?

I am rereading the Twilight series; I have also read The Host by Stephenie Meyers. What else have I read???? I read a lot of beach novels, light, entertaining reads by Nora Roberts, Jude Deveraux, and Diana Palmer. I also read books like "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Wicked". I also like to read young adult literature and am a huge fan of the Percy Jackson series (the movie comes out in time for my birthday next year!!).

3. As a child, what did you do in your free time?

Read, listened to music, and played the piano. At one point in time, I actually had a piano in my room and everyone could tell what I was feeling, depending on how loud I played!! Music has always been one of my favorite things. I remember putting on my favorite tape (pre-CD!!) and then just sitting and writing what it made me think of. Hmmmmm...haven't done that for a while...

4. What’s a goal that has been on your list for a few years?

PLAY GUITAR!!! I am absolutely obsessed with this goal. I am really hoping to learn how to play it by this time next year.

5. What do you actually do with your free time?

Most of the time, I hang out with my kids, watching TV and VERY occasionally playing video games. I love to read!!! and watch TV. Sometimes I will feel motivated to clean the house. ; )

6. What types of activities energize you?

Dancing. I got out my, yes, MY!!, DDR dancepad and danced the other night. I could do that for hours...or, well, more realistically, until I run out of breath.

7. What famous people intrigue you?

Most. I would really like to meet writers, especially the ones mentioned above. I would also like to meet different movie stars, but who changes from day to day.

***

Well, that is a lot to think about right now... and I need to get back to work...

S-

Let the games begin...

Not really sure what that meant...just killing time until a commercial is over, and the show is over because I am finally watching the Glee episodes that I have DVR'd. I cannot express to you how much I love that show. Needless to say, it is right up there with Gilmore Girls. It may not have the crazy woman with the smart daughter who talks incredibly fast...but it has TEACHERS and SINGING and TEACHERS SINGING!! : D It is amazing. The story is a bit overdramatic (hmmmm...so is my life?), but there are some very talented people on this show.

Moving on to favorites...I went and saw New Moon. Twice. Which is probably not a lot compared to other fans out there, but I will say that I enjoyed it both times. I think that they were able to flesh out the story a little more. It was longer than the first (BRAVO!) and, imho, closer to the book. At least, Jasper was able to speak a little bit more. (Total side note: for those of you who are fans of this series and The Last Airbender...Jasper is set to play Sokka! Woohoo!!) While I will say that Jacob was intense, smoldering, and sculpted, there is still no beating the endless, eternal love that Bella and Edward have for each other. The drama that goes on off screen, be it true or not, only adds to the chemistry between them. I am anxiously awaiting Eclipse, and am currently re-reading the series to refresh my memories.

One last thought, as my thoughts are fast drifting away due to sleep deprivation, is that I am very ready for the holiday season.

Show is on...must go and then go to bed!

S-

And the winner for avoiding work goes to...

...me!! LOL Okay, so I did get some work done. I am now up to November. Which makes me think that I should be taking a break in remembrance of Thanksgiving. : ) (I knew I should have written that book of excuses!!)

What have I been up to? Hmmm...well, first there was the teaching of summer school, an oxymoron of course, because neither the students or the teacher really want to be at school. I do hope that I inspired the students to at least write just a little bit. We also had some great conversations and I bruised myself. Fun time.

Next there was a trip to Laughlin. I got to see a cover band for Bon Jovi and that was cool. The rest of the trip, well, we can just delete that.

Around the trip, though, I got to see my two bestest best friends, Kerrianne and Annie, and their families. That was awesome!! We got to go to the park, swimming, and lunch. It was great seeing them both again, even though I think it made me miss both of them even more. Hopefully, it will not be long before I can see them again.

Then we come to the concert. 3 Doors Down, prefaced by Parachute and SafetySuit. It was amazing...exciting...and a really fun time. Ashley was there with some of her friends and a lot of other friends and family were there as well. Almost everyone went home happy (I did have one friend who didn't like the music...).

And now we come to today. *sigh Well, I got some laundry done, dishes done, exercised on the WII Fit for day 2 (I had taken a wee break), and then started work on the longest project of my LIFE. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I doubt it. I am to plan a month-by-month timeline for 6th-8th grade English that is correlated to the standards. As I mentioned before, I am up to November for 6th grade. The good news is that once I finish 6th grade, the other grades SHOULD just fall into place. I hope.

That brings us up to speed. If any of you care to know what I am watching, though, it's the BBC production of Robin Hood. It's quite good, mabe a bit melodramatic, but then again, I love drama.

A fare thee well to all...

S-

If I'm laughing...

...I am probably watching Gilmore Girls. It started out just being a week like any other. Then yesterday I had some of my students put a few grasshoppers in the toilet. But today was the kicker...a student decided to wash his hands in the toilet. How many weeks until the end of school?? : ) In tribute, I decided to write a poem. Here goes:

Clean hands?

I washed my hands, said little Tim.
I made them really clean.
My friends all saw just what I did
But it made my teacher scream.

You see, I did not wash them in the sink
I did not use the soap
I did not turn the water on
I knew that I could cope

I had a secret place
My plan was already set
It only took me a second
To wash my hands in the toilet.

Teen movies...

This week has been a fun movie week. April and I went to see Hannah Montana: The Movie for her birthday. I have to say I am NOT, NOT a fan. I almost never watch her show, never listen to her music, and haven't bought any of her merchandise. That said...I LOVED IT!! I mean, really, truly, will-buy-it-when-it-comes-out, loved it. It was clean, it was fun, and it had a great soundtrack. Admittedly, country has grown on me and HM had some of my faves - Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, and of course, Billy Ray, himself. I really like his new single...and for those of you who are doubters...he has come a long way from his achy-breaky roots (though I do remember rockin' out to that tune many a time in the day).

I first started to notice Miley when she was a voice in Bolt. I really enjoyed that film, as well. So after that, I thought I would give her new movie a shot. I think most of the "haters" would have to admit that this girl can sing and even act a little... LOL The movie focuses on the fact that she has become a little too HM, which is kind of interesting as we have seen that fame has definitely gone to Miley's head just a bit as well. Due to this, Dad decides that she needs to go back home and discover who she is even if that means that she will never be HM again. Well, I won't spoil the ending, but it's a cute, fun journey of self-discovery with her meeting a cute cowboy to help her along the way. As I said before, the soundtrack is catchy and includes all of the people I mentioned above as well as a few new songs from Miley herself. I am looking forward to her new album, and have to admit that I am now a fan.

As for the other movie that I saw this week (those of you who know me, know my addiction to the thee-ah-ter), it was the oh-so-fun, oh-so-anticipated, 17 Again. Flashback a few years, and I remember all of the movies that had age regression. Hello?? Big?? Dream a little dream?? So I have always enjoyed watching movies that talk about what COULD HAVE BEEN. This one has a new spin in that our young Zac Efron has impregnated his HS sweetie and decides to give up everything to marry her. I guess here is the part where I can tell you a lot of us relate. I mean, how many of us wonder if we had done X, then maybe Y would/wouldn't have happened. Maybe somewhere I took a wrong turn and I was really supposed to be a high powered lawyer. Or I was actually supposed to finish the book I started in sixth grade and submit it to become the next big writer. Who knows? : ) This movie explores what happens when you have that second chance. Admittedly, the ending is a bit cliche, but HEY! I GO to movies for happy endings. The fun thing about this movie, other than the talented Zac Efron and the puppy-eyed Matthew Perry, are the other characters. Leslie Mann (anyone remember George of the Jungle?) plays the almost ex-wife, who decides to divorce him for his complaing for 20 years of what could have been. His nerdy best friend...he's the ultimate dork who grows up to be a gazillionaire...is funny and even he ends up with the girl of his dreams. Those of you who follow Disney stars will also get a kick out of seeing Chad Dylan Cooper of Sonny with a Chance as the awkward son who eventually finds his way.

I think what I enjoy the most about these movies, other than the fact that they are just good fun, is that it makes me remember what I was like when. When everything was fresh and new. When you fell in love for FOREVER and EVER. When you knew that you were going to be friends with your kids. When you knew that you wouldn't make the mistakes of all of the adults around you. When you knew that even though you weren't a rock star, that you would be one some day. And walking out of the theater, remembering all of that, was a pretty good way to end the night.

And there you go. See em or don't...but honor the kid inside of us all.

Moms and minivans...

As I was driving home today, I was thinking about all the many reasons about why I love my minivan and what it says about me. So here goes:

1) Need a ride? Sure! I have seats for my family AND friends. This symbolizes my love of family and friends and my need to be a social butterfly. I think it's important to have room in your heart for all sorts of people...maybe even some new friends...

2) Blue. The color of loyalty. Just like I am loyal to my minivan, I try to be loyal to all the people in my life. Some would even say that I am loyal to a fault, for once someone is a friend of mine, I always tend to think the best. Of course, blue is also the color of royalty...in this case, it's not so much me, as the royal prince and princesses I drive to and fro everyday.

3) Another thing I like is that when I drive my minivan, is that I sit up straighter and can see everything around me. I liked my car...I used to drive an Alero...but I love the feeling of being able to feel like I am riding above it all.

4) Last of all, I like my minivan because of it's stability. It has been there for me...in fact, a few years ago I was in an accident and the van I drove was one of the reasons that I escaped with only a few bruises.

Well, there it is. Some reasons why I like driving my minivan. Ever since I was 16, this was my dream car. Which, when I tell my students, they laugh...

S-

To commemorate my new blog...

...I shall first say why I wanted to change it. First of all, trying to blog during school hours is HARD!!! I do have an account on Facebook, but I just wasn't using my myspace page that much. I feel a moment of sadness for the good times I have had on there, but I am sure that I will be just as happy typing away on here.

I guess that is all for now...

S-

Back to School 2008

Here we are...another year! I really love talking to the parents (maybe because they are adults, and I usually talk to children??). These conferences have been no exception. I have an awesome group of children, seeing as this is my son's class. He is in the other fourth grade, but I have a lot of his friends that he has grown up with. Man, they grow fast.

In other news, I am pregnant and due June 8th. I mean, when I sit right down and think about it, I wonder why I am not a Wal-Mart greeter. I'm friendly, out-going, and confident. I work well with people, and more importantly I like meeting lots of people and chit-chatting for no particular reason. If I was a greeter, I would work my shift and go home. No take home work, no papers to grade or people to call. What would THAT be like??

Having got that out of my system, I have to admit I love my job and would never want to be doing anything else. I love that children listen to what I have to say and that I can teach them something more than they know yesterday. I love being at school where my children go and seeing them all the time. I love having my own desk, my own space, and knowing that I am a professional. I love dressing up and going into work knowing that I am doing something worthwhile with my life.

As you can tell, I really did not have too much of a purpose in writing today. Just a couple of thoughts I would put out into cyber-world.

S-

Back to work!

I thought I would have time to write...I don't! I have one on myspace (yes, I do have a myspace!) and I have another on Yahoo360!. However, I guess that was not good enough because here I am again, on yet another blogging site to share my alarmingly predictable life.

First of all, a shout out to two of my very bestest friends who were already on here.

Second of all, I have decided that since I do have another blog, I dedicate this one to more work-related stories; especially, since I usually have time to type a little something during lunch and/or afterschool.

I guess that is about all for a first entry.
